Workplace safety in Australia is governed by strict regulations, but knowing what to wear is only half the battle — understanding why each piece of PPE matters is what builds a genuine safety culture.

1. High-Visibility Clothing

Hi-vis garments are mandatory on most Australian worksites. AS/NZS 4602.1 sets the standard for day/night visibility. Look for Class D/N rated garments that maintain their brightness after repeated washing — visibility degrades with wear, and a faded vest is a compliance issue as much as a safety one.

2. Hard Hats

A quality hard hat rated to AS/NZS 1801 is your first line of defence against falling objects and head impact. Replace your helmet after any significant impact — the expanded polystyrene liner absorbs force invisibly, and a helmet that has taken a hit may offer no protection the second time.

3. Safety Footwear

Steel-capped or composite-toe boots rated to AS/NZS 2210.3 protect against crush injuries and penetration hazards. Make sure your boots have a slip-resistant outsole suited to your specific work surface — a boot rated for dry concrete offers very different grip on wet steel grating.

4. Gloves

The right glove depends on the hazard. Cut-resistant gloves for materials handling, chemical-resistant nitrile for wet or solvent work, and anti-vibration gloves for extended power tool use. Never assume one type covers all situations — the wrong glove can provide false confidence.

5. Eye and Face Protection

Safety glasses, goggles, or face shields rated to AS/NZS 1337.1 are essential wherever there is risk of flying particles, chemical splash, or UV exposure. Anti-fog coatings and wraparound frames matter in practice — workers who can see clearly are workers who actually keep their PPE on.
